31 July 2009

Following the announcement by The Hon Julia Gillard MP, Deputy Prime Minister on 4 May 2009, East Gippsland Institute of TAFE confirms that from Monday 3 August 2009, the ATC-Gippsland will be integrated into the operations of East Gippsland TAFE (EG TAFE).

The College will be renamed as Gippsland Technical College (G-TEC), a division of East Gippsland TAFE.

Ms Angela Hutson, CEO of East Gippsland TAFE, said: “Although finalisation of arrangements have taken some time, all parties have worked collaboratively to ensure this wonderful, local educational asset can now continue to provide for Gippsland’s future skills needs, for many years to come. We are delighted to be able to continue the good work undertaken by the ATC-G and its Board.”

“As a very important division of East Gippsland TAFE, every effort will continue to be made to ensure that the inclusion of G-TEC into EG TAFE will be as seamless as possible for students, parents and employers” said Ms Hutson.

The Gippsland Technical College will continue to offer students the opportunity to complete their Year 11 and 12 Victorian Certificate of Applied learning (VCAL) or Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) as well as supporting each student through their apprenticeship or traineeship.

Students will continue to undertake their trade training in their school based apprenticeship. Work placement arrangements in place will continue as planned.
Ms Ann Furphy, EG TAFE’s G-TEC Transition Coordinator explained: “On Monday 3 August 2009, students will find G-TEC is operating as usual and classes will remain as timetabled.”
“During the first month of operations, EG TAFE will ensure that parents and employers have an opportunity to attend an information session on G-TEC and parents are encouraged to contact our G-TEC staff if they have any questions.”

With the amalgamation of these two successful vocational educational institutions, the Gippsland region is assured that this valuable, specialised trade training college will continue to deliver outstanding training for our young people.

Ms Hutson said: “We will work very hard to build close relationships with industry and therefore grow numbers of young apprentices for the region, and the regional skills base.”
