Climate change is a global issue that affects us all. Never before has it been such a hot topic. With many people asking what more they can do, there is an ever increasing demand for services to assist householders in reducing water and energy use and in improving sustainable living practices.
In a bid to help Australians tackle climate change, the Federal Government has introduced the Green Loans Program which provides eligible householders an interest free loan of up to $10,000 to support homeowners with installing solar, water saving and energy efficient products.
In order to access the loan, residential properties need to undergo a free Home Sustainability Assessment by a qualified assessor. The Home Sustainability Assessment involves a comprehensive look at the household and provides practical advice on how to reduce consumption, which may include small changes in how things are done around the home, to major investments such as the installation of a solar hot water system. The assessment educates people on how to live in a more sustainable way. Enabling the householder to reduce running costs, save dollars on utility bills and reduce their impact on the environment.
As part of the Nation Building Economic Stimulus plan, the Australian Government has also released a package that includes $1,600 for the installation of ceiling insulation to help Australians improve the energy efficiency, comfort and value of their homes.
Mr Fred Vanderslik from East Gippsland TAFE says “These initiatives are great news for local tradespeople who are looking to expand their business and offer a great service to their customers and their community. To support local tradespeople with gaining the right skills and qualifications we have introduced a new Home Sustainability Assessor course. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be qualified to undertaken Home Assessments that support home owners with accessing the Government interest free loans. The course also provides a partial credit towards an Insulation Installer qualification.
“Not only does this new course provide local businesses with a new income stream, it’s a great way for them to do their bit to help the environment.”
