A statement released on behalf of Professor Peter Coloe, Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Science, Engineering and Health, RMIT said: “After carefully weighing up the student and staff feedback, RMIT will make arrangements with East Gippsland TAFE so that all continuing students can finish the course at Sale, with RMIT teaching the course out.”
RMIT will offer both second and third year classes in 2010, and third year classes in 2011 to enable existing students to complete their qualification.
This news confirms that these existing students will not be required to travel to Churchill or Melbourne to complete their qualification.
RMIT has reported that Monash Gippsland will offer, at a minimum, an extra 20 places in their nursing program, ensuring that there is no loss of nursing student numbers in the region.
In addition, Monash’s Gippsland Medical School (GMS) is planning to have a stronger presence in the town of Sale, with the construction of expanded learning facilities at the site of the local hospital.
With the development of the GMS initiative in Sale, there may be opportunities to develop a Monash nursing presence in the town.
The Executive Team of East Gippsland TAFE is in discussion with a range of higher education providers to investigate options for additional higher education places for nursing, and other disciplines, within the region.
