Deakin University and East Gippsland TAFE signed an agreement today to bring the Deakin at Your Doorstep Program to Gippsland next year, enabling the regions residents to study a new Associate Degree of Arts, Business and Sciences at East Gippsland TAFE’s Bairnsdale Campus. The Associate Degree is a pathway through to a range of bachelor degrees including arts, commence, management, education and health sciences.

The two education providers believe the program will benefit the region through improving career opportunities for locals in roles such as accountants, primary school teachers and health care professionals.

CEO of East Gippsland TAFE Ms Angela Huston said: ‘We are very excited to be able to offer this program to Gippslanders. This initiative truly supports our region by continuing to build a strong community and supports our young people with staying at home. The Associate Degree provides greater accessibility to higher education for our school leavers and adults who wish to pursue or advance their career, without having the burden of relocating to realise their dreams.’

The Associate Degree of Arts, Business and Sciences is a two-year full time (or equivalent part time) qualification that can be undertaken concurrently with a Diploma from East Gippsland TAFE. Students may gain up to 18 months credit in their chosen bachelor degree which can be completed at Deakin University’s Warrnambool Campus or via off campus study.

Deakin’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Rural and Regional) Professor Sue Kilpatrick said ‘The program provides increased educational opportunities for people in Gippsland. We’re excited about the possibilities this opens up for students but also for the benefits it will bring to Gippsland,’ Professor Kilpatrick said.

‘The Associate Degree provided people with the option to learn where they live and is the ideal pathway to a bachelor degree.’
