The Hospitality, Service Industries and Equine team of East Gippsland TAFE held a Twilight Festival incorporating their Open Day on Friday 23rd October at the Bairnsdale campus.
Students undertaking Events qualifications co-ordinated and ran the event as part of their final assessment for 2009 under the guidance of their trainer, Michelle Ross.
Anne Rigg, Manager of the department said “this is the second largest event these students have organised. They have developed numerous skills that will ensure they are work ready.”
Anne explained that combining the Open Day with the Twilight Festival provided a fantastic opportunity for the team to showcase their students, share information about 2010 courses and give people the opportunity to meet and greet staff. “Our Operations Manager Martin Grundy was particularly excited about discussing the new Beauty course that will commence in 2010” she said.
Practical demonstrations included a gourmet BBQ with Culinary Trainer/Assessors Polly Stevenson and Jane Pinzone, Cup Cakes and Canapés with Culinary Trainer/Assessor Sam Hunt, Mocktails/Cocktails with Food & Beverage Trainer/assessors Mark Shelton and Ginny Parish, and Gueridon of crepe suzettes with Food & Beverage Trainer/assessors Carole Anne Hock under the watchful eye trainer/assessor Steve Lambert.
The event also included a Free Expression Hairdressing Competition where participating students were judged by local industry representatives. Competition was tight, with Courtney Stephenson, Aleisha Smith, Jenna Gallatly and Brodie Harris winning first, second, third and fourth places respectively. Well done to all students who participated.
Everyone who attended the event also had the opportunity to sample and nibble their way through the evening sampling local food, wine and music and to purchase some early Christmas presents from the participating stallholders.
