Since its inception in 1989, SEAMEC has become a nationally renowned training provider known for its specialist expertise, industry links and training expertise. The centre combines training and assessment in the fishing, maritime, recreational boating and aquaculture areas with research in conjunction with RMIT.

SEAMEC operates from a state-of-the-art marine research and education centre located on Bullock Island at Lakes Entrance, Victoria.

Lakes Entrance is south east Australia's largest commercial port, and SEAMEC students are fortunate to have access to local fishing trawlers and shipyards as part of their training exercises.  Further, Lakes Entrance is also a major Victorian recreational maritime and tourism hub.  Among its natural advantages are:

  • the state’s largest commercial fishing port
  • eight National Parks in the vicinity, along the coast and inland, including the Alpine National Park (Victoria's biggest), the Snowy River National Park and the UNESCO- listed Croajingalong National Park that embraces 100 kilometres of coastline.
  • the Gippsland Lakes, the biggest expanse of inland waterways in the southern hemisphere
  • the renowned 90 mile beach.
