Manager of the Local Community Partnerships Program (funded by DEEWR) through Gippsland East LLEN, Wendy Major, was one of the first clients to utilise the services of East Gippsland Skills Store.

“It is a requirement of my employment that I complete three introductory units from the Australian Career Development Services package, but given the nature of my current and previous employment I decided to explore the option of ‘recognition of prior learning’ for both myself and another staff member,” said Wendy.

“I would describe most of my skills as community development skills, however I have mainly worked with people wanting to start or change their career paths or engage in volunteering. I have worked in a management role much of the time and recently completed my Diploma of Front Line Management through East Gippsland TAFE.

“Skills Store came along at just the right time for me. The process was very easy. I knew exactly what I needed and the consultant was able to locate the right training package. From this point I had to select a recognised training organisation to do an assessment. I was already enrolled at EG TAFE so I felt it made sense to choose the same RTO (Registered Training Organisation).

“Within a short time I had been contacted by an assessor, who quickly identified the evidence required for Recognition of my skills and prior learning. I provided position descriptions from my current and most recent employment, copies of my qualification certificates and a testimonial from my executive officer. A few weeks later I received my certificate,” she said.

Wendy said the only challenge she faced was tracking down position descriptions from previous employment.

“My requirements were very straight forward, but I still had to prioritise the time to collect the evidence and submit it for assessment. My assessor made the process simple and that was a great help. She has a lot of expertise in the training package which the modules came from and was confident in her capacity to identify the required evidence.”

“Our program has just been monitored by DEEWR, so it was good to know that all my staff had met the training requirement – including me. I have since referred a new staff member to the Skills Store and have recommended the process to many others.

“I have also had the benefit of RPL (Recognition of prior learning) in completing the Diploma of Frontline Management. The recognition of the tasks you are actually doing in the workplace matched against training competencies is a liberating and rewarding experience.”
