Originally from Sydney, Lisa Humphries arrived in Sale in 2008 with her husband and two children. Hoping to undertake further study she contacted East Gippsland Skills Store for advice.

“I was lucky enough to land a full time administrative position with the Federal Government and was really looking to settle in to more study. I accessed the website and made an appointment to meet with staff at East Gippsland Skills Store,” she said.

“I decided I wanted to obtain a Diploma in Business Management as had only recently completed a Certificate III in Business Administration which I found interesting. I wanted to undertake study that I knew would be attainable and where I would be supported by both family and education staff,” she said.

According to Lisa moving to smaller areas and finding suitable employment is not always possible. She is strong believer in updating and improving skills to make this process easier.

“Career advancement is something that I am always working towards as I don’t believe you can ever get enough of learning and seeking out new ventures. I felt that being able to use the skills that I have achieved to date would help towards the reward of a Diploma. This is why I chose to undertake further studies through East Gippsland TAFE where recognition of your prior learning and skills is all taken into account,” she said.

“Knowing that achieving a Diploma is as simple as completing a few units and that others are recognised by previous hard work is great.

When asked what challenges she faced as a working mother trying to undertake further study, Lisa said “I find that no matter how keen I am to commence studies something always comes up and places you a little behind. The experienced staff at Skills Store have been there to assist when I need them. They have helped me through the more difficult processes such as trying to gather evidence and to remind me of what my original intention was”.

“It is frustrating when you know that you have done something previously in your career, but having changed jobs or having supervisors or peers move on means it can be difficult to prove this experience.

That’s why visiting the skill store and discussing you past experience and looking at options such as skills recognition is so valuable and helps to put together the information you need.

Lisa believes the confidence she has discovered through further study will most certainly work towards advancement in her chosen field.
